SSD Data Recovery
We recover data from SATA, M.2 NVMe and mSATA SSDs, from computers, laptops and external drives, with faults in the controller, the firmware, the electronics or the memory chips. Our own laboratory in Carcavelos, recovering data since 2004, with a success rate of 98.40% in 2025 across all services, audited every year.
Free collection request
Technical Diagnosis in 2 hours* and free collection in mainland Portugal.
"*" indicates required fields
In short
Fill in the online request and send us only the SSD: collection is free in mainland Portugal. With the SSD at the laboratory, we carry out the diagnosis in 2 hours* and publish the final quote on your request page. The recovery only begins if you accept it. If you deleted files or formatted the SSD, stop using it now.
SSD data recovery in the laboratory
An SSD has no mechanical parts: it stores the data in NAND memory chips, managed by a controller. When the controller or the firmware fails, the SSD is no longer recognised, even with the data still on the chips.
Depending on the fault, we repair the firmware, work on the electronics or read the memory chips directly (chip-off) and rebuild the data the way the controller organised it. There are controllers and types of encryption where recovery is not possible: the diagnosis is there to find this out before going ahead. We are the only data recovery laboratory certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 in Portugal.
Symptoms: what your SSD is telling you
| What happens | Likely cause and what to do |
|---|---|
| It does not appear on the computer, not even in the BIOS | Fault in the controller or the firmware. Do not keep trying to switch it on. |
| It shows the wrong capacity or a strange name | Firmware fault. Do not update the firmware or format it. |
| Very slow, freezes or gives read errors | Memory chips failing. Switch it off: forcing it to read makes the damaged blocks worse. |
| The computer asks you to format it | Damaged file system or firmware. Do not accept: click Cancel. |
| It stopped working after a firmware update | Corrupted firmware. Switch it off and do not try the update again. |
| It shows no sign of life or smells of burning | Electronic fault, often due to a power surge. Do not switch it on. |
| You deleted files or formatted the SSD | The controller gradually erases in the background what is no longer in use. Stop using it now. See recovering deleted files. |
Types of fault
The SSD is not recognised, shows the wrong capacity or failed after an update.
Power surges and damaged components: the SSD shows no sign of life.
Wear from use or damaged chips: read errors, slowness, unreadable blocks.
Deleted files, formatted SSD, lost partitions, damaged file system.
Most common causes: power surges and power cuts, natural wear of the memory with use, heat, failures during a firmware update and human error (deleting or formatting by mistake).
What you should never do
On an SSD with a fault or with deleted files, every minute it stays on can erase data for good.
Click Cancel. Formatting or initialising changes the way the controller organises the data.
Recovery software forces the SSD to read non-stop and makes the damaged memory blocks worse.
How much SSD recovery costs
* The 2 hours are counted in order of arrival and within opening hours; on a deleted or formatted SSD the diagnosis takes 2 to 4 days. SSDs opened or tampered with before arrival may need an Advanced Diagnosis, at a cost, always communicated in advance. On some SSDs, when the recovery is complex, an initial amount is requested, stated in the quote: if there is a recovery, it is deducted from the price; if there is not, it covers the recovery attempt and is not refunded.

Frequently asked questions
Can I try to recover the data from the SSD myself?
If the SSD is not recognised, is slow or gives errors, no: recovery software forces it to read non-stop and can permanently ruin the damaged memory blocks. If you deleted files, stop using it now and do not install anything on it.
Can deleted files on an SSD still be recovered?
Sometimes. The SSD controller gradually erases in the background what is no longer in use, so every minute of use reduces what can be recovered and a full recovery cannot be guaranteed. Switch off the SSD as soon as possible. In these cases the diagnosis takes 2 to 4 days.
How long does the recovery take?
The diagnosis is done in 2 hours, in order of arrival and within opening hours (2 to 4 days on a deleted or formatted SSD). The recovery depends on the fault and the service chosen: 24 hours, urgent (1 to 3 working days), priority (4 to 7 working days), standard (8 to 12 working days) or non-urgent (15 to 30 days), with a lower price for those who are not in a hurry.
How much does it cost to recover the data from an SSD?
It depends on the type of fault; the prices by level are published on the prices page. The exact amount is in the final quote, which you receive after the diagnosis. The Technical Diagnosis is only charged if you do not accept the quote or the Advanced Diagnosis, or if the device is so damaged that no quote can be given. On some SSDs an initial amount is requested before starting, always stated in the quote.
What if I accept the quote and then there is no recovery?
You pay nothing for the recovery service or anything else; return shipping costs are separate. In some cases an initial amount is requested before work starts, always stated in the quote: it is deducted from the price if the recovery succeeds and, if it does not, it covers the attempt and is not refunded. If you accept and do not pay the initial amount within 5 working days, the device goes into storage, at a cost of 1 EUR + VAT per day, up to a maximum of 60 days. After that period, the device is recycled free of charge and the storage remains payable.
The SSD in my laptop is soldered to the board. Can you recover it?
In some laptops, such as the most recent Macs, the SSD is soldered to the board and cannot be removed. These cases are assessed one by one: there are models where it is possible and others where it is not. Contact us before sending it.
